The 3 “A” That Can Change Your Life
There are three ‘A’ in yoga asanas (postures) practice, the driving principles of practicing yoga that can be applied to all life situations. The three ‘A’ in yoga are:
Attitude – is your heart, the intention of yoga practice. It is an inner vision that answers ‘why?’
Alignment – is your mind, the knowledge of techniques in your practice. It is a method and knowledge that answers ‘how?’
Action – is a physical body, manifesting the intention and knowledge of the practice. It is the bodily manifestation that answers ‘what?
I have learned these three principles form one of yoga teachers at the studio I used to go to before I accomplished a yoga teacher training myself. These three criterion, if applied in every day situation, have a power to alter your experience and perception in life.
Attitude principle is a question of ‘why you want what you want, why you associate with some people and with others not, why you feel motivated or not in each and every moment?’ This is the question that underlines your approach to every person and situation you find yourself in. The answer to this question is a building block of your life experience and will reveal your motives behind and your true intentions. Of course, the answer needs to be truthful because only then will provide clarity and the understanding of your inner world, your values and true Self. Such truthful answer allows for being discerning why we do what we do. Some time such honest self – feedback can be scary because it may uncover true motives which may not always be so glamorous. Being honest with your self and always checking in with the emotions that are our bio-feedback is not something we would do consciously due to social conditioning which discourages self – inquiry from the early childhood. Therefore it takes courage and practice to develop the principle of answering the question ‘why? – what are our motives and intentions?’. Be open and give yourself permission always be honest with yourself. Ultimately we cannot deceive ourselves because at the deepest level of our Being, our Soul knows the truth and you can sense it through your emotions. Every time you feel discordant emotions to what you think, that’s the clear indication that you have not been honest and true with yourself.
Alignment answers question ‘how do we go about or how do get where we want to be?’. Some time this question can put us in a kind of paralyses where we feel there is no room to move forward and we feel literally stack in the rut. This happens always when you look for modes of ‘how’ without realizing your true motivation and intention behind. Once you know your ‘why?’, the ‘ how?’ will fall into place. You may have ‘aha’ moments, get inspired by seemingly random things: an ad, overheard conversation or a stranger, friends, your mentor, options are almost endless. Be alert! Observe the outside situations and tune in to your inner small voice, your intuition which may whisper awaited answer to the question ‘how?’. Do not second guess the information when they are coming from your intuition, because you will end up in your rational mind telling you that the intuitive information are bogus and you can’t do what your intuition tells you. This is again the effect of centuries long social conditioning. You need to be attentive and learn how to discern what comes from your intuition which is always a subtle knowing and suggests solutions and insights that are aligned with your true self and your individual path. Practice and with the consistent practice, like in yoga, you will fine tune your ability to communicate with your Soul by the means of intuition.
Action answers the question ‘what?’ which refers to what results you want to achieve. Quite often we come up with ideas what we want and then try to figure out how to get to where we want to go, but this approach again will take us to the dead end. You can only find the path that will bring you to your desired destination once you know the ‘why?’, which is the attitude element of this manifesting triad. As you can clearly see the intention and motives are the bases for creating in life things we really want. Without knowing your ‘whys?’, your deepest and truest reasons behind every action you take, you can’t bring into physical reality the manifestation of what you want. The ‘why?’ always determines the final results in the manifestation process of our desires which are inherently imbedded in our intention and true motivation.
This is your yoga practice off the mat applicable to every-day situation. This is a matrix for manifesting your desires – the 3 x ‘A’ explained:
Attitude = answers ‘why?’ = intention, motivation
Alignment = answers ‘how?’ = means, methods, practical solutions
Action = answers ‘what?’ = results we want, manifestation of the intention
